International Driver's Licenses

An international driver's license may not be enough to drive in Maryland

Many people come to this country with international driver's licenses. They may have a valid license from their home country or an international license. We get frequent calls from individuals who are charged with driving without a license or driving on a suspended license despite the fact that these individuals have licenses. These are serious charges that carry possible jail time as well as points.

Maryland law requires that anyone who moves to Maryland get a Maryland license within 30 days. Thus, the police and State's Attorney's office take the position that these foreign licenses are not valid. Many police do not recognize international licenses at all.

If you have moved to Maryland, get a Maryland license. It will save a lot of time and trouble. If you are charged with driving without a license or driving on a suspended license, get a Maryland license before court. An attorney then may be able to get the State to drop the charges.
