Reckless Driving: Watch Your Speed

Scott Scherr • April 7, 2026

Police are issuing tickets for reckless driving for speeding 30 mph over the speed limit and you could go to jail.

On October 1, 2025, the Maryland legislature made traveling 30 miles over the speed limit a jailable offense. Anyone proceeding 30 or more miles over the speed limit faces a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail, a $1,000.00 fine, and six points on their license.

I have received many calls from people charged with reckless driving and have handled these cases in Cecil County, Baltimore County, Kent County, Worcester County, and Harford County. While none of my clients have received jail time,  I have heard reports that some judges are sending people to jail.

It is easy to lose control of your speed. Maybe you are not paying attention, are running late, or keeping up with traffic. It is important to be cognizant of the speed limit which may change frequently particularly in small towns.

The fact that the charge carres 6 points is concerning. It only takes 8 points to cause a license suspension and 12 points to have your license revoked. Points accrue in a 2 year period based upon the date of the incident.

Everyone needs to watch their speed. Otherwise, there could be severe consequences affecting your ability to drive and your liberty.
