The MVA Will Soon Start Fining Maryland Residents With Out of State Tags

It has been a longstanding problem. Many Maryland residents have Virginia tags because Virginia has significantly cheaper registration fees. Virginia used to not require insurance at all although that has changed.

The Motor Vehicle Administration can launch an investigation into Maryland residents operating a vehicle with Virginia tags. The owner will be given 60 days to comply and obtain Maryland tags. Effective October 1, 2026, if they do not comply, they will incur significant fines. They can be fined $7.00 for each day they are not in compliance up to $420.00. If the vehicle owner reaches the maximum, the MVA can remove the tags or file suit in court. Citizens can file complaints against those with Virginia tags resulting in an investigation by the MVA.

Now is the time for Maryland residents with Virginia tags to voluntarily comply with Maryland law. Otherwise, in addition to fines by the MVA, they can be cited a traffic violation which carries a fine up to $500.00. All Maryland residents are required to register their vehicles here within 60 days of moving to Maryland.
