New Tax Laws Take Effect July 1st
There are new taxes effective July 1, 2025.

The Maryland legislature has passed several new tax laws that take effect July 1, 2025. These taxes will affect most people one way or another. Certain fees have also increased under the new law.
There is a brand new 3% tax on the sale of IT services which is known as the "tech tax.". This will apply to data stored in the cloud, computer repairs, technical services, data processing, website design, and more. This appears to be a compromise between the sales tax (6%) and the fact that these services were not previously taxed.
There are higher taxes on cannbis sales which increase from 9% to 12%. The tax on mobile sports wagering increases from 15% to 20%. The emissions inspection fee more than doubles from $14.00 to $30.00. There are increased fees to register your car as well as on car rentals. There is a new fee on the sale of new tires in the amount of $5.00. There is a new sales tax on gold and silver (6%).
High wage earners will also be affected under the new laws. Individuals making more than $500,000 will pay a higher state income tax. Local governments are also permitted to assess higher taxes which will affect everyone.
The new laws are now in effect. Be prepared to have a little less spending money in your pocket.
